Pilgrimage Portraits

These portraits shed light on a dark moment in U.S. history. The unjust incarceration of Japanese Americans into concentration camps during World War II is a story that must be told and retold. I recently attended pilgrimages to two sites that were once Japanese American concentration camps. These are my portraits of individuals at those pilgrimages. The handwriting describes their strength in the face of adversity as well as their courage to remind each of us about the fragility of democracy. The work honors the resilience of those who endured this injustice, reminds us of a moment that should never be forgotten, and the importance of standing up against bigotry and discrimination.
